A Midsummer Night's Dream Performance Project

Now that you have read AMND, it's time to put on the play (at least part of it)! Follow the directions below to successfully produce your scene.

Step 1: Understanding and Annotating the Script

Before you worry about who is going to play what part, you need to become an expert on your scene:

Step 2: Casting
  • when everyone understands the scene, cast the parts
  • actors may 'double' on shorter parts
  • appoint a director(s) to oversee the whole production
  • fill out "Acting Company Worksheet"

Step 3: Blocking
  • read through the scene, locating character entrances and exits
  • decide on appropriate placement and movements for the characters and write them into your script
  • move through the blocking several times. Talking about what to do is not the same!

Step 4: Characterization
  • read through your lines silently and aloud many times until you're sure you understand every word, phrase, and sentence
  • identify your objectives in the passage
  • decide what words, phrases, or ideas need to be stressed and indicate that on your script
  • decide what pauses are appropriate and indicate them on your script
  • identify your movements
  • read your part aloud many times - you do not have to memorize the part(s), but you should feel completely comfortable with it when you perform it in front of the class

Step 5: Furniture, Props, Costumes, Music
  • decide if you need furniture - remember that classroom desks can be trees, walls, etc.
  • decide what props you need and who will bring them
  • decide on costumes - these don't need to be elaborate, but you will feel more like a performer if you change your appearance to look somewhat like the character you are portraying
  • select appropriate music to play as an introduction to your performance - if you like, let the music be heard during the performance as well - the characters, action, and mood of your scene should guide your choices

Step 6: Rehearse!
  • get on your feet and go through the scene acting out the parts
  • use your notes on blocking to help you decide where to come in, where to stand, which direction to turn while speaking, where to exit, etc.
  • listen to your director - she may have suggestions about changes in blocking, movement, inflection, pauses, characterization, etc.

Step 7: Performances
  • performances will be video recorded and posted on the wiki for the inspiration and enjoyment of the other 9th grade English classes!

Evaluation:

Individual (50 points)
  • understanding of character(s)
  • understanding of plot
  • understanding of language
  • ability to use language to portray character
  • use of rehearsal time
  • annotated script: definitions, notes, blocking, etc.

Group (20 points)
  • well planned movements
  • well planned use of props and costumes
  • use of rehearsal time
  • appropriate music selection
